History of International Women’s Day
The idea of celebrating International Women’s Day originated from a labor movement. In the year 1908, when 15,000 women took out a rally in New York City, demanding reduction in working hours, pay according to work, as well as the right to vote. Exactly a year after this incident, the Socialist Party of America declared this day the first National Women’s Day. In the year 1911, the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
